Job Description
Sinai Health is looking for a Research Ethics Coordinator to support our Research Ethics Board Department at our Mount Sinai Hospital Campus.


The Research Ethics Coordinator is a key administrative position within the Research Ethics Board. In this role, the Research Ethics Coordinator will have both scientific and ethics review functions, as well as a liaison function. The successful candidate will demonstrate familiarity with experimental design as it applies to both biomedical and social scientific research, and have an understanding of the most recent ethical standards as captured in the Tri-Council Policy Statement, which provide the framework for critical review. Outstanding communication skills (both written and verbal) and excellent judgment are required for this position.


About This Team:
The Mount Sinai Hospital Research Ethics Board (REB) oversees all research involving human subjects conducted under the auspices of Sinai Health to ensure that such research meets the highest scientific and ethical standards in order to protect patients, investigators and the institution. In total, the Board is responsible for reviewing and approving over 350 new studies each year involving human subjects, as well as monitoring an estimated 1500 ongoing studies lasting in excess of one year. All research involving human subjects within Sinai Health requires approval of the Research Ethics Board prior to the initiation of a research project.

In this role you will:
Coordinate all aspects of the submission, review, revision and approval of research protocols
Use sound judgement when determining the need for external review in collaboration with the Research Ethicist, REB Manager, and external scientific reviewers

Conduct preliminary assessments of scientific merit and ethical considerations of submitted protocols

Assign protocols to REB members and determine the need for and coordinate the use of external reviewers
Draft initial communications to investigators concerning issues raised by the REB, and update investigators and research staff on ethical and administrative policies
Develop and implement new administrative procedures and forms as required and assist investigators with the completion of documentation
Act as a resource for REB members, research coordinators and investigators on ethics matters, policies and procedures
Liaise with other REBs, community representatives, pharmaceutical companies and government agencies as required on ethics matters
Administrative duties within the Research Ethics Board Office including coordinating REB meetings, maintaining files and databases, and assisting with educational programs on research ethics
Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements
Mandatory
Successful completion of a University degree in a related field from an accredited educational institution
Successful completion of a Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited educational institution preferred
Minimum of three (3) years of related experience preferably within a hospital or health-research environment
Preferred
Experience in clinical research conducting trials or acting as a research coordinator or monitor
Skills and Knowledge
Familiarity with experimental design as it applies to both biomedical and social scientific research and the most recent
ethical standards as captured in the Tri-Council Policy Statement
Knowledge of Health Canada Regulations, the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), and Good Clinical
Practice Guidelines (ICH/GCP)
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word)
Demonstrated analytical skills with exceptional communication (verbal and written), organizational and interpersonal
skills
Meticulous, detail-oriented and capable of prioritizing, working independently and problem-solving
Ability to act with tact and discretion
Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
