Chair, Research Ethics Board Sinai Health System

Sinai Health System, a full affiliate of the University of Toronto, is seeking applicants for the role of Chair, Research Ethics Board (REB).

Effective start date of the appointment is May 1, 2021 or shortly thereafter.

Sinai Health System (SHS) is an academic hospital comprised of Mount Sinai Hospital, Bridgepoint Active Healthcare, Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute (LTRI) and affiliate Circle of Care – working together to create a premier exemplar of an integrated health system. Sinai Health System has a combined 837 beds in its two main hospital campuses, encompassing acute, rehabilitation and chronic care. The Research Ethics Board reports to the CEO or delegate, and to the Sinai Health Board through the Research Committee of the Board, and liaises with the Director of Research, LTRI.

The REB Chair has oversight of human research studies across 18 Departments, and ultimate responsibility for ensuring the REB process conforms to all applicable regulatory requirements. They advise the organization on policies and procedures related to the ethical conduct of research involving human participants. The SHS REB receives approximately 400 review applications annually. Research trials include those funded by Government, Granting Agencies, and Industry. The REB Chair represents Sinai Health on the Clinical Trials Ontario (CTO) Research Ethics Board and assists in CTO qualification activities.

The successful candidate will have a medical degree and/or graduate degree in a health-related field. They will have extensive experience as an REB Chair or member, and expertise in policies, guidelines, regulations and standards governing the ethical conduct of research and protection of human research participants. They should have experience or understanding of the diverse nature of research undertaken at SHS (basic, clinical, health service and policy research). The successful applicant will supervise the activities of the REB and its staff, and should have strong organizational, management and team skills.

The Chair is a .2 FTE commitment. Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
